Project Description:

This exhibition will explore Thomas Jefferson's vision for acquiring and developing the western continent - the Louisiana Purchase and the Oregon Country. Jeffersonian documents (letters, maps, journals, paintings) and objects will illuminate his conception of the West and follow his vision through generations of explorers, scientists, entrepreneurs, and settlers. "Inventing Oregon" will borrow from the collections of major national museums and engage leading Lewis & Clark and Jefferson scholars. The Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation (Monticello) and the Oregon Historical Society will curate the exhibit. It will open in Charlottesville in 2003 for the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial kickoff, then travel to St. Louis for the Louisiana Purchase bicentenary. It will show in Portland 2003-2004 then travel to other museums in the Pacific Northwest.
