Project Description:
The McCormack auto tour route has several scenic viewpoints overlooking the Columbia River that offer excellent sites for interpretation of Lewis & Clark's relationship with local tribes, their observations of local fish and wildlife, changes in the landscape in the past 200 years, and current refuge management. On this stretch of the Columbia River, Lewis & Clark noted the salmon harvest underway and camped on the night of October 19, 1805 off present-day Irrigon, possibly on Blalock Island, which is part of the refuge. This project would develop and install two interpretive exhibits and provide road improvements and pullouts at the viewpoints.
