Project Description:

Project will develop historically significant Lewis & Clark Trail sites within CTUIR's aboriginal homeland, such as Hat Rock and Umatilla townsite. Project will 1) identify, interpret, and protect historical and cultural sites relevant to Corps of Discovery and Tribal history; 2) establish multi-use trails along Columbia River; and 3) promote regional tourism. The Homeland is eastern gateway for Lewis & Clark Trail in Oregon and includes public lands under jurisdiction of federal, tribal, state, and local governments/agencies. The project will: 1) research oral history, 2) develop interpretive content/locations, 3) establish trails, 4) create regional tourism strategy, and 5) create commemorative events. Began in 1999, continues through 2006.

To date: USFS, NEH, OCH, NPS grants to CTUIR for data-gathering and oral history, RARE/UO positions for planning support. Others contributing in-kind planning: Morrow Co., Oregon State Parks, USACE, ODF&W, NPS's Whitman Mission, Umatilla Co. Historical Society, Umatilla/Morrow ESD, City governments (Umatilla, Hermiston, Pendleton), local Chambers of Commerce.

Project Status:

To date: contracted archival research for interpretive plan. Contract for Interpretive Center Feasibility Study. Convocation of Elders, scholars & students on history, pre-contact to Lewis & Clark. Grant for data-gathering to map/promote Corridor. Host RARE participants focused on Lewis & Clark planning.
