Project Description:

The first annual Heritage Day, held on October 17, 1999, commemorated the day the Corps of Discovery camped off the shore of the Irrigon Marina Park and celebrated the official unveiling of the Heritage Trail Concept Plan. The second annual Heritage Day will be held on October 15, 2000, the Sunday closest to the actual October 19, 1805 date the Corps stopped in the county. The event includes a presentation by Lewis & Clark scholars, local tribes, and the Heritage Trail Committee status report, a pie social, historic re-enactors, costume parade, and Native American exhibits. In 2003-2005 the committee plans to host Clay Jenkinson, a Jeffersonian Scholar who performs as Thomas Jefferson and Meriwether Lewis.

Project Budget:

Total:

$8,000

Funded to Date:

$1,200

Support:

Heritage Day is an all-volunteer event. Morrow County has committed in-kind support for planning and organizing. The Boardman and Irrigon chambers collaborate on event planning and donation of materials. The Historical Society, Boeing International, Umatilla Electric Cooperative, and Commission on Children and Families have donated small grants, materials, and in-kind services.

Project Status:

Planning for Heritage Day 2000 is underway. Planning for the larger events in 2003-2005, including an invitation to Clay Jenkinson, is forthcoming.

The primary challenge is to raise up-front funds to host a major presenter at the events in 2003-2005. The Committee also plans to further collaborate with efforts in neighboring Morrow County.
