Project Description:
Research and writing for a book by Mark Spence, Assistant Professor of History, Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois. Spence is examining the celebrations of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, including the centennial fair in Portland in 1905 and the approaching bicentennial in 2003-06. By studying the expedition's historical legacy and the national fascination that surrounds it, Spence is looking for insights into the relationship between land and culture over time, in particular, the "nature of nation".
